Gilson Embraces Sustainability Through IT Recycling

In today’s fast-paced world, technology plays a crucial role in the success of businesses worldwide. However, companies face the challenge of responsibly disposing of outdated information technology (IT) equipment as technology advances. The improper disposal of electronic waste (e-waste) has become a global concern due to its harmful environmental impacts and potential security risks. In light of this, many forward-thinking companies, including Gilson, are adopting sustainable practices to address these issues.

Managing IT Equipment Turnover

Gilson recently worked with IT Recycling, an environmentally conscious organization specializing in picking up, disassembling, and recycling old, depreciated, and broken IT equipment, to address their surplus of outdated IT equipment. Marty Vijverberg, ITS Manager, Infrastructure and Operations, for Gilson’s European offices, recently shared his positive experience with the company’s IT recycling initiative in the Netherlands.

IT Recycling follows a rigorous protocol for handling discarded IT equipment. They disassemble each device, separating the plastics and precious metals like gold, silver, copper, nickel, and palladium. By recovering these precious resources, IT Recycling ensures they can be repurposed to create new products. This reduces the demand for raw materials and the ecological footprint associated with their extraction.

Sustainable Data Destruction

One significant advantage of partnering with IT Recycling is their focus on proper data destruction. IT Recycling is ISO 9001-14001 and WEEELABEX-certified, guaranteeing that their data destruction service fully complies with these standards. This additional service is provided by an onsite truck equipped with a powerful hard drive shredder that processes the hard drives twice, reducing them to small, 9-millimeter pieces. This rigorous shredding process ensures that any data left on the hard drives is irrecoverable, preventing potential security breaches. The shredding process used by IT Recycling helps efficiently separate different materials.

IT Recycling also handles small electronic components, including mobile phone SIM cards, USB sticks, and memory cards. Their truck houses a specialized machine that turns small electronic components into fine dust, enabling the separation and recycling of all metals and plastics present in these smaller devices, further reducing the environmental impact of electronic waste. These processes help companies like Gilson reduce the amount of e-waste in landfills or incinerators.
